Purina Family Pet Center

In 2016, we will see the construction of the Purina Family Pet Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.  It will be built at the west end of the 2nd floor hallway adjacent to the patient drop-off area in the parking garage. Combining the hospital’s focus on family-centered care with the understanding of the healing power of the human-animal bond is the basis behind this new program. Pets are important family members and many studies have shown that pets can promote and improve the patient’s wellness.

The goals of the Family Pet Center:

  • Create a comfortable, safe and welcoming environment where patients and their families can reunite with the family pet while the child is in the hospital undergoing treatment.
  • To bring joy and overall emotional well-being to children and their families through the therapeutic impact of personal pet interaction.

The rectangular-shaped room will feature washable surfaces (cleaned after each visit) and windows to provide natural light. It will be able accommodate a child in a wheelchair or hospital bed. Children and their families will be able to arrange for pets to visit the hospital through the coordination of nursing and child life staff, and a doctor must write an order for the visit. The pet would enter and leave the center directly from the garage protecting other hospitalized patients.
